Prose_Sociology PhD Programs in Hong Kong
Recently, I was hesitant to apply for the doctoral program. I checked the programs of famous universities in Hong Kong. Here, I will briefly write their academic research focus as follows:
The Department of Sociology in HKUST is dominated by quantitative research methods (64% of the teachers in the whole department use quantitative methods), and there are 11 teachers in the Department of Sociology (excluding research assistant professionals). Based on the application of quantitative methods (1) social stratification and mobility (Wu Xiaogang), (2) demographic (gietel-base, Stuart, Cameron Campbell, Ma Zhongdong, (3) Sociology of Education (Li Zhongqing, Julian groves, Wang Hongbo, but among them, groves uses qualitative methods); the main fields of qualitative methods are (1) political sociology (Li Jingjun, Cai Yongshun, Zhang Han, but among them, Zhang Han uses big data quantitative methods), (2) Cultural Sociology (Gu Shumei). In general, the research focus of HKUST sociology department is social stratification and mobility, political sociology.
The research of the Department of Sociology of CUHK is mainly based on quantitative research methods (70% of teachers use quantitative methods in the whole department), and there are 10 teachers in the Department of sociology. Quantitative methods are used in the following fields: (1) social stratification (Tan Kangrong), (2) Educational Sociology (Wang Shuying), (3) demography (CAI Yuping, Tong Yuying, Jin Lei), (4) Criminology (Zheng Huiting, Zhong Hua); qualitative methods are used in the following fields: (1) labor Sociology (Chen Jingci), (2) historical sociology (mark) Cohen, (3) Christian greiffenhagen. Generally speaking, its academic research has no obvious shortcomings or characteristics.
Teachers in the Sociology Department of HKU mainly use qualitative research methods (17.6% of the teachers use quantitative methods in the whole department), and there are 17 teachers in the Sociology Department (excluding lecturer). Quantitative methods are mainly used in Demography (John bacon shone, Eric WC Fong, Xu Duoduo, focusing on Immigration Studies); qualitative methods are mainly used in (1) Cultural Studies (David a Palmer, cheris s c Chan, Sylvia J Martin, Tom McDonald, Tommy H L TSE, Victor K W Shin), (2) gender studies (Julie ham, Travis s k Kong), (3) criminal studies (Karen a Joe Laidler, MAGGY s y Lee, Paul Joosse, Wang Peng), in addition, (4) labor worker study (pun Ngai), (5) medical sociology (Tian Xiaoli). In general, the academic research focus of HKU is cultural research.
The Department of Sociology in PolyU is dominated by qualitative methods (20% of teachers in the department use quantitative methods), and there are 11 teachers in the Department of sociology. Social stratification and mobility are mainly based on quantitative methods (Gu Jinghua, LV Qinghu, Chen Huiling); the application of qualitative methods are mainly used in (1) urban and Rural Sociology (Yan Hailong, Gu Xuebin, Jin Qingyang, Zhan Yang, focusing on China Africa connection, urban and rural connection), (2) Development Sociology (Ding Tianyue, Zhu Weizhi), (3) Anthropology (cockain, Alex, Xiao wanwen). In general, the focus of its academic research seems to be the rural changes in China.
In addition, CityU’s website doesn’t provide a PhD program in sociology.
